Clarification, and an Update
Dear Subscribers,
I recently switched on the “paid subscription” setting for this newsletter, but nothing will change. I will continue to offer all posts to both paid and free subscriptions. I switched it on just in case any of you would like to make a monthly donation to my writing efforts (the minimum Substack allows is $5/month or $50/year).
An update on my writing:
I have completed my book of fly fishing essays, Two Thirds Water (some of which have appeared here on Substack in their entirety, excerpted or as drafts). I’m really pleased with the final product, and I am hard at work on finding a publisher and/or agent representation. I have received some very positive responses so far (even high praise from one of my favorite fly fishing essayists, Nick Lyons—that meant a lot to me).
I’m submitting short fiction to contests and magazines and have begun a new novel that is starting to take on a life of its own (requiring more and more of my writing time—a good thing—but one that sometimes may keep me from making as many posts on Substack as I would like to).
I’m putting the finishing touches on a podcast on “Cross Country Snow,” another Hemingway story from In Our Time, which I should upload to Hemingway Word for Word very soon. I am using the podcast to help frame a book on Hemingway in which I hope to offer a fresh, more complex approach to his work. The podcast is nearing 1,000 listens, and nearly a quarter of my audience is from outside the U.S.A.
From my “Self Portrait” Substack posts, I’m starting to build toward the idea of a book (memoir/creative nonfiction) connecting the many, varied but inter-connected things that make me who I am: writer, fly angler and fly tier, guitarist, cyclist, outdoorsman, bread baker, maple sugarer, forager….
Thanks so much to all of you for subscribing, commenting, and sharing my work. I love knowing that my words are going out to a small, appreciative audience.
Arnie
